About this Resource
Dave Kovar has been in the martial arts business 48 years. He runs eight locations with roughly 3,000 members, and where the industry averages a 5–7% monthly quit rate, his company targets 3% and has been as low as 3.5%.
In April 2026 we sat down with him to get both halves of it: the math and the mechanics. The math is brutal and clarifying — at a 7% quit rate and $112 a month, a member is worth about $1,000 over their life; drop the quit rate to 3% and raise the rate, and the same member is worth closer to $7,000. Most of that swing comes from the quit rate, not the price.
The mechanics are what he does in the first ninety days to earn it. Those are what's in here, in his order.
