Mark Bruce on turning attendance into a competition
Mark explains how the 1% Board works at FIT | STRENGTH Performance, and why handing the tracking to Committed Club got his coach out of the reports.
FIT | STRENGTH Performance trains athletes from age 11 up, plus a roster of adults, out of a gym in Fairport, New York. Owner Mark Bruce wanted a way to reward the members who kept showing up, so he built the 1% Board: hit eight check-ins in a month, get your name on the wall. The idea worked. The bookkeeping did not.
Introduction
A Board on the Wall, and a Coach Stuck in the Reports
Qualifying for the 1% Board meant somebody had to count. At FIT | STRENGTH, that somebody was a coach, working through members one at a time.
Mark moved the tracking into PushPress Committed Club. Now the count runs itself, members watch their own progress in the app, and his coach gets the whole roster in one report.
The Problem
Someone Had to Count the Check-Ins
A consistency program is only as good as the counting behind it, and at FIT | STRENGTH that counting was a person.
“At my gym, we were manually doing it,” Mark says. “So I had a coach, delegated it to her. She would go on the report, have to pull up everyone.”
Every month, for every member, by hand. It was time a coach would rather have spent on the floor with athletes.
Members Couldn't See Where They Stood
The board told members who had already made it. It could not tell them how close they were. Without a running count in front of them, there was nothing to chase mid-month.
The Solution
Name Your Own Club, Then Let Core Count
Committed Club lets a gym set its own club name and its own check-in threshold. Mark kept the name he already had, the 1% Board, and set the bar at eight check-ins a month.
Eight is deliberately reachable. PushPress recommends a lower threshold like eight or nine when the goal is to include as many members as possible, rather than to make the club exclusive.
The target itself is the point of the program.
“The goal is to really get people to want to come to the gym two, three, four times a week and then reward them for that commitment,” Mark says.
Progress Shows Up in the Member's Pocket
Once the club is running, every member sees their own count in the PushPress Members App after each visit.
“Now with this new feature, it's automatically going to show right on their app, which is going to make it fun for the client to see on their phone, like, oh, I came eight times, nine times, 10 times,” Mark says.
That matters more than usual at a gym where the member is often a kid and the customer is a parent.
“Having the member and the parent and the adult see it on that phone, like, hey, you only got in eight sessions this month or seven, make them more engaged and eager to get in a couple more sessions,” Mark says.
One Report Instead of a Roster
On the staff side, the qualifying list arrives ready to read. Core keeps each member's streak and year-to-date check-in totals at the top of the member table, so nobody counts anything.
“Even for our coach now, she can just see the full report, easily, how many people came eight times, put the name on the board,” Mark says.
Then comes the part members actually care about. Mark picks a name for member of the month and hands out a gift from the community. His summary of the whole thing: “Gamify it.”
Result
The Counting Stopped Being Somebody's Job
The manual report pull is gone. The coach who used to run it monthly gets that time back, and the qualifying list is now a byproduct of members checking in rather than a task on someone's calendar.
“PushPress has made that super simple,” Mark says.
Every Member Has a Number to Chase
The visible count changes what the program can do. A board that only recognized finishers now nudges everyone still short of eight, in the app, in their own hand, before the month runs out.
Conclusion
Build the Culture First, Then Automate the Admin
Mark's program did not start with software. It started with a board on a wall and a reason for members to want their name on it. PushPress took over the part that was never the point.
